Bismarck Palm - Bismarckia nobilis

Bimsarck Palm / Bismarckia nobilis
A Quality Plant gets requests for this exceptional palm as much as any other palm we carry. It seems that people either love them or hate them. I think the Bismarck Palm is an exceptional palm and have planted eight in my own yard.

The Bismarck Palm comes from the highland savannas of it'e native home of Madagascar.

The Bismarck palm's fronds are silver in color and rather large. At maturity, the Bismarck Palm can be over twenty feet wide.

The Bismarck Palm is drought tolerant, salt tolerant, disease resistant, and surprisingly wind tolerant. They can be over-trimmed and under fertilized and still look amazing. The more silver the Bismarck Palm, the more cold hardy the palm and the better the palm handles frost. There is a variety that is green and should probably be avoided unless you are a completist.

Bismarck Palms start out slow and then are medium growers once established. The Bismarck Palm is fun to watch grow and I think it is a must in every palm garden.

Removal of Palm trees / Selling your Palm Tree

There are many decisions to be made once you decide to remove a palm or palm trees from your yard. A Quality Plant is asked to remove Palms frequently.

The reasons for removing a palm tree include:
The Palm Tree is dead
The Palm Tree was planted in an inappropriate spot (coconut palm over where you park your car, too close to the house, etc)
The Palm Tree has grown too tall and is out or proportion to the house or too costly to maintain
You don't like Palm Trees or don't like the type of palm tree you have

Removing the palm tree from your yard can be difficult and costly. There can be many unseen obstacles under the ground including utilities, pieces of concrete, septic systems, irrigation pipes and controller cables. There can be many obstacles above the ground like power lines, trees, fences, paver walkways and driveways.

A Quality Plant removed four Foxtail Palms from around an infinity pool in Apollo Beach, Florida that had outgrown the 4' planters they were in. The palms had begun to crack the cap around the pool. I had nightmares about this job. After digging the palms with a gas powered shovel and exerting 5500 lbs of force, the palms came out. We replanted the palms on the side of the house and the Foxtail Palms  became the focal points of a new outdoor sitting area.

Some palm trees have resell value. There are palms that we remove at no cost and there are palms we remove and actually pay the homeowner for their palm. The value is based on supply and demand and quality of the palm.

A large palm removal will require up to 2 yards of dirt to fill the hole. A Quality Plant will commonly provide a replacement palm or tree and install the new plant at the time of the palm tree removal.

Bismarck Palm - Bismarckia nobilis - Bismark Palm

Bismarck Palms installed.
A Quality plant grows the Bismarck Palm for wholesale palm sales and for retail palm sales. We install the Bismarck palm for customers too. The Bismarck Palm is unique with it's silvery blue coloration on the fronds. The Bismarck Palm is large in stature and can grow to be over 20' wide. The trunk of the Bismarck Palm is thick and will lose the old leaf boots once the palm has approximately 4-6' of trunk.

The Bismarck Palm is cold tolerant down to the low twenties and cold hardiness goes hand in hand with the coloration. The more silver the Bismarck Palm, the more cold hardy. The Bismarck Palm has no known diseases and is surprisingly wind tolerant once established.

Here are a couple we installed this week in a homeowners yard. The truly are a magnificent palm!

Washingtonia Palms - Washington Palm

A Quality Plant specializes in the removal and installation of large Washingtonia Palms. A Quality Plant has hundreds of Washington Palms with 25 to 65 feet of cleat trunk in stock.

Larger Washingtonia Palms can become a nuisance for homeowners when trimming becomes dangerous or costly. Homeowners call A Quality Plant every week asking to have these palms removed from their yards and replaced with smaller palms.

Street Plantings commonly use these larger Washingtonia Palms. Commercial Construction Projects with large entrance ways or tall buildings use the Washingtonia Palms too.

A Quality Plant is delivering 12 Washington Palms to Celebration, Florida this week. These 12 palms have 25-35' of trunk and will require a crane and two semi's for the delivery.

Ribbon Palms - Livistona decipiens - A Quality Plant

Ribbon Palms - Livistona decipiens

The Ribbon Palm is closely related to the Chinese Fan Palm but has some characteristics that make it better suited for landscapes. The Ribbon Palm has persistent boots that are most persistent at the base of the palm. The leaf is divided once to the base of the petiole and then again halfway. This is what creates the Ribbon look to the leaf.

The Ribbon Palm will take a mild frost with little or no damage and can survive temps into the teens. The growth rate is medium and, under the right conditions, can be 2-3 feet of trunk growth in a year.

The Ribbon Palm loves full sun. It is much harder to keep a Chinese Fan Palm dark green in full sun than the Ribbon Palm.

The old fronds / boots of the Ribbon Palm will eventually shed and reveal a burgundy ringed trunk that is attractive.

A Quality Plant grows and sells the Ribbon Palm / Livistona decipiens and we have them field grown and container grown.

Medjool Date Palm, Phoenix dactylifera and Canary Island Date Palm

Two of the most majestic palms are the True Date Palm / Medjool Date Palm / Phoenix dactylifera and the Canary Island Date Palm / Phoenix canariensis. They can be planted in groups or as a stand alone specimen. In either case, they are magnificent.

Phoenix dactylifera
variety Medjool is widely used as an ornamental. Taller, thinner, and with spikier, bluish leaves than its popular cousin from the Canary Islands, the Medjool Date Palm is a handsome tree. The Medjool Date Palm's adaptability to a wide range of climates, excellent resistance to drought, salt spray, brackish water, and various pests, and its general robustness make it the palm of choice for dry climates, temperate as well as tropical. Phoenix dactylifera tolerates salt water intrusion and cold better than all the other Date Palms.

Phoenix canariensis, Pineapple Palm, or the Canary Island Date Palm is one of the most popular landscape palms. The stout form of the Canary Island Date Palm is a familiar sight in most warm temperate and subtropical countries of the world. The Canary Island Date Palm with it's stately appaearance spans nearly thirty feet on mature specimens.
Make sure and check out the other Cold Hardy Palms we specialize in at A Quality Plant by visiting our website or one of A Quality Plant's 5 locations. We offer Wholesale Palm Pricing and Quantity Discounts on our Wholesale Palms.

A Quality Plant - Florida Wholesale Palms - Canary Island Date Palm

The Phoenix canariensis, more commonly known as the Canary Island Date Palm or Pineapple Palm, makes a bold statement with it's 25' span and thick trunk. The fronds of the Canary Island Date Palm are up to 12' long and dark green. The leaflets grow in a flat plane creating a feathery look to the frond.

The Canary Island Date Palm looks great by itself and looks spectacular in groups of three or more.

A Quality Plant is both a locator and grower of the Canary Island Date Palm. We offer delivery and installation too.

Other cold Hardy Palms we grow include the Pindo Palm, the Sylvester Palm, the Washingtonia Palm, the Queen Palm, the European Fan Palm and many more!

Pindo Palms, Butia capitata, Jelly Palms

A Quality Plant delivered and installed two Pindo Palms yesterday. Both Pindo Palms received a specialty cut and had 4-5' of trunk. The customer wanted the Pindo Palms for the fruit that they produce. The Pindo Palm is also called the Jelly Palm. The seeds can be eaten when ripe or used to make Jelly. Ripe seeds on the Pindo Palm are red/orange in color and about the size of a quarter. Pindo Palms are Cold Hardy Palms taking temperatures as low as 10 degrees with little or no damage. The Pindo Palm is slow growing, has feathery blueish green fronds that are recurvate.

We installed a Sylvester Palm / Phoenix sylvestris at the same location. The fruit of the Sylvester Palm can be eaten too. The fruit is not as large as that of the Phoenix dactylifera but can be tasty especially after a dry spring.

Another Palm that makes edible fruit is, of course, the Coconut Palm!

The Silver Date Palm (Phoenix sylvestris) or Silver Date Palm is a Cold Hardy Palm taking temperatures down into the high teens.

The Sylvester Palm has blue/green fronds that are bushy and stretch 7' in all directions. The trunk of the Silver Date Palm is not as wide as it's cousin, the Canary Island Date Palm, but is still stately. The trunk is typically orange in color and when the Sylvester Palm is trimmed up tight, the palm is very showy.

Wholesale Ribbon Palms, Livistona decipiens, Cold Hardy Palms

Native to Australia the Ribbon Palm or Ribbon Fan Palm/Livistona decipiens is a slightly cold hardy palm tree that can handle temperatures within USDA hardiness zones 9-11 although some people say they even do well in 8b. Chinese Fan Palm / Livistona chinensis - Cold Hardy Palms

Chinese Fan Palms - Livistona chinensis
Livistona chinensis or the Chinese Fan Palm makes a great addition to sub tropical gardens in zone 9 or higher. The Chinese Fan Palm is slow growing, disease resistant and fairly drought tolerant.

The leaves of the Chinese Fan Palm elongate in shade and the Chinese Fan Palm will lose the spines from the petioles in full shade. The leaves of the Chinese Fan Palm will grow larger in shade too.

A full sun Chinese Fan Palm looks very different from a shade grown one. The full sun grown Chinese Fan Palm will have a compact stocky look and will have visible spines close to the base of the frond.

I like them both and have both in my own yard.

The Chinese Fan Palm is slow growing. The Chinese Fan Palm will grow faster with copious amounts of water and fertilizer but will never grow fast.

Chinese Fan Palms - Livistona chinensis
Frost can do cosmetic damage to the Chinese Fan Palm even in Zone 9. The leaves will brown and the tips and yellow over the entire surface area if the frost is heavy.

Most Livistona species have shown some cold hardiness. One that does better in a frost is the Livistona decipiens or Ribbon Palm.

Triangle Palm - Florida Wholesale Palms - A Quality Plant

The Triangle Palm or Dypsis decaryi is a striking addition to the tropical and sub tropical garden. The Triangle Palm can withstand freezing temperatures for short durations and a light frost with minimal damage. The Triangle Palm holds it's form, in the shape of a triangle, throughout the life of the palm. A Quality Plant has installed them on either side of a walkway to create an arch effect. The leaves are silver green and upright. The Triangle Palm begins to form a trunk once the palm grows to 10-12' tall. Eventually the old "boots" will fall off and expose the woody part of the Triangle Palms trunk.
