Chinese Fan Palm / Livistona chinensis - Cold Hardy Palms

Chinese Fan Palms - Livistona chinensis
Livistona chinensis or the Chinese Fan Palm makes a great addition to sub tropical gardens in zone 9 or higher. The Chinese Fan Palm is slow growing, disease resistant and fairly drought tolerant.

The leaves of the Chinese Fan Palm elongate in shade and the Chinese Fan Palm will lose the spines from the petioles in full shade. The leaves of the Chinese Fan Palm will grow larger in shade too.

A full sun Chinese Fan Palm looks very different from a shade grown one. The full sun grown Chinese Fan Palm will have a compact stocky look and will have visible spines close to the base of the frond.

I like them both and have both in my own yard.

The Chinese Fan Palm is slow growing. The Chinese Fan Palm will grow faster with copious amounts of water and fertilizer but will never grow fast.

Frost can do cosmetic damage to the Chinese Fan Palm even in Zone 9. The leaves will brown and the tips and yellow over the entire surface area if the frost is heavy.

Most Livistona species have shown some cold hardiness. One that does better in a frost is the Livistona decipiens or Ribbon Palm.

Triangle Palm - Florida Wholesale Palms - A Quality Plant

The Triangle Palm or Dypsis decaryi is a striking addition to the tropical and sub tropical garden. The Triangle Palm can withstand freezing temperatures for short durations and a light frost with minimal damage. The Triangle Palm holds it's form, in the shape of a triangle, throughout the life of the palm. A Quality Plant has installed them on either side of a walkway to create an arch effect. The leaves are silver green and upright. The Triangle Palm begins to form a trunk once the palm grows to 10-12' tall. Eventually the old "boots" will fall off and expose the woody part of the Triangle Palms trunk.

Ribbon Palm - Curved  - Livistona decipiens
Looking for a cold hardy palm? The Ribbon Palm /Livistona decipiens can withstand freezing temperatures and even a good degree of frost with little or no damage.

A Quality Plant has many sizes of Ribbon Palms to choose from with some specimens towering to 40' tall. A Quality Plant also has curved Ribbon Palms with 6 - 14' of trunk. The Ribbon Palm has a medium growth rate.

The Ribbon Palm does indeed give the appearance of ribbons hanging down from the crown. This is due to the splits in the leaf. One split reaches to the base of the leaf and the next to the halfway point.

The Livistona decipiens has recently been renamed the Livistona decora. We will stick to the common name Ribbon Palm.

Curved Ribbon Palm - Livistona decipiens
This Ribbon Palm was planted in a customers yard in Apollo Beach, Florida. The curve allowed us to plant the Ribbon Palm near the house and still have space between the fronds and the roof. This customer has about 15 different varieties of palms in their yard now. Go Oliver!

A Quality Plant - Florida Wholesale Palms - Canary Island Date Palm

Canary Island Date Palm - Pineapple Palm - Phoenix canariensis
The Pineapple Palm, Canary Island Date Palm, Canary Palm, or Phoenix canariensis has got to be at the top of the list for impressive palm trees. The thick trunk and large arching green fronds always makes a landscape pop. I have been in hundreds of palm tree farms all over the state of Florida and have to say "I have only been wooed three times". At the top of the list is a field of mature Canary Island Date Palms. I had to stop driving to admire the astonishing beauty of a couple thousand Pineapple Palms. Wow!

The Canary Palm works in Tropical and Mediterranean landscape applications. They just look good period.

Other cold hardy Date Palms:
True Date Palm, Phoenix dactylifera, Medjool Palm
Sylvester Palm, Silver Date Palm, Phoenix sylvestris
