Creating a hedge with the Areca Palm

The Areca Palm or Dypsis lutescens makes an outstanding hedge. The Areca Palm has a clustering characteristic and many growers will combine multiple plants into one cluster which makes for a thicker plant.

Spacing can be from 3 feet to 6 feet or more depending on the size palm you are planting and how much of a hurry you are in to have your new screen.

Areca Palms are medium growers and can be in partial shade or full sun. Areca Palms are more golden in full sun and are sometimes called the Golden Cane Palm.

This fast growing, Cold Hardy, drought tolerant palm loves well drained soil and lots of fertilizer.

The Queen palm begins life with a booted trunk. This eventually turns to a grey color trunk referred to as grey wood. Ten feet of Grey Wood will result in a palm that is 24-26 feet tall.

Creating a Privacy Hedge with Palm Trees

There are several palm trees that work great as a privacy hedge. Here is a list of Palm Trees commonly used for Privacy Hedges:

1. Areca Palm, Golden Can Palm  or Dypsis lutescens - The Areca Palm is used throughout south Florida for Privacy Hedges. The palm is also used in coastal areas or microclimates throughout central Florida. The palm has a medium growth rate, multiple trunks and is self cleaning (the palm drops old fronds without the need to trim). Growers will typically put a dozen seeds in one pot when growing the Areca Palm to make it extra full at maturity. The Areca Palm can have a golden look on both the canes and the fronds when in full sun. That is not necessarily a sign of a nutrient deficiency. Spacing for the Areca Palm can be 4 to 6 feet depending on how quickly you want your privacy hedge to be complete.

2. Fishtail Palm or Caryota mitis - The Fishtail Palm works well too for a privacy hedge. The growth rate of the Fishtail Palm is medium. This hedging palm likes some shade but can be used in full sun if given plenty of fertilizer and water. The trunks of the Fishtail Palm will die as they flower/seed. The dead trunks will need to be removed. Spacing for the Fishtail Palm would be 4 to 6 feet on center.

3. Lady Palm or Rhapis excelsa - The Lady Palm is another one that prefers a little shade. The Lady Palm will grow nicely under Oak canopy even. The Lady Palm has slender canes that can be slicked up to look like Bamboo. Spacing for the Lady Palm would be 3 to 5 feet on center.

4. Paurotis, Everglades Palm or Acoelorrhaphe wrightii - This Florida Native Palm Tree is a slow grower and unlike the other palms recommended, has spines. The Paurotis Palm requires periodic trimming to remove the dead/brown fronds. Spacing for the Paurotis Palm would be 6 feet plus.

There are other palms that can be used to create a Privacy Hedge and some can be mixed with the choices above to create a more varied look to the hedge. Queen Palms, Foxtail Palms or Royal Palms can be planted between every three or four of the palms above to add a little shade and frost protection to your Privacy Hedge.

The Chinese Fan Palm will work for a period of time that suits many peoples needs. Ultimately, this palm will outgrow being a hedge. It has worked in my yard for 13 years now and I am not totally opposed to its use as a hedge.

Sabal Palms are cold hardy into the single digits. That has been important for the folks up in the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama and Louisiana.

Sabal Palms are slow growing. Most of the palms we sell are 20 to 30 years old! It takes a Sabal Palm 5 years or more to form any trunk at all. After that you can expect about 6" of trunk growth per year for Sabals.

Sabals are wind resistant, drought tolerant, cold hardy and slow growing. All these characteristics going for it...no wonder the Sabal Palm is a favorite palm for Wholesale Palm Buyers!

Florida Wholesale Palms - Fertilizing Palms for the Spring Season

A Quality Plant is expecting this year to be a record breaking year for wholesale palms sales! Each of the last five years has been better than the last. I am glad that AQP planted thousands of palms each of those years to keep up with the demand.

A Quality Plant has just finished fertilizing our palms. Beating the rain has been the trick. All of our Sylvester Palms in the front field got 8 pounds of fertilizer two weeks ago and have had three healthy rains. We fertilized the other two fields today and we are getting a bunch of rain right now! I love the rain after fertilizing. It will be getting pretty cold on Friday in Central Florida. That I can skip!

Canary Island Date Palm Sales and Installation / Grading a Pineapple Palm

A Quality Plant installs Canary Island Date Palms of all sizes. The price of the palm is determined by the quality of the tree. The quality of a Canary Island Date Palm is a factor of:

Color of the fronds
Fullness of the head
Caliper of the trunk
Condition of the trunk
Straightness of the trunk
Size of the Pineapple


A Florida Fancy Canary will have all of the above going for it. A Florida #1 will be a very nice palm but will be missing slightly in one or more of the determining factors. A Florida #2 will be substantially missing in one or more characteristics.

I prefer a Canary with good distinction between the smooth part of the trunk and the Pineapple.

A Quality Plant had the priveledge of providing palm trees to Hollywood movies on two different occassions. The first group of palm trees were for the movie "Battle: Los Angeles". The palms were very tall Washingtonia Palms with the foliage removed. The palm tree foliage was actually added later and was not real. The trunks of the palm trees were though!

That was pretty cool to be a part of. We are now providing palm trees and tropical plants to the upcoming movie starring..Johnny Depp!! The movie is a real life story about Whitey Bulger.

Black Mass is an upcoming crime movie by Scott Cooper starring Johnny Depp as the infamous organized crime figure Whitey Bulger. The movie is based on the best selling novel by Dick Lehr and Gerald O'Neill about Bulger's true life story. The action/drama also stars Benedict Cumberpatch and Dakota Johnlson and is set to be released in October of 2015.

The palms are going to be donated to an indoor tropical garden after the movie shots with the palm trees and plants are complete. That is very cool too!

We can trim up the Pineapple on the Canary Island Date Palm or leave the ferns on the palm. Either way, the Canary Island Date Palm is impressive.

#2.  Most palm trees have no value as a Florida #2. Although we rarely install a #2, they do have some value. A #2 would have imperfections like constrictions in the trunk or a head that has very few green fronds. Some Canary Island Date Palm's can have deep holes in the trunk or chainsaw gouges that are deep.

#1. A #1 Canary Island Date Palm has good color and average trunk caliper. A nice palm.
