The Major Date Palms can put an exclamation point on any landscape. Residential Landscapes and Commercial Landscapes both can benefit from the use of Date Palms. They are drought tolerant and the Date Palms are cold hardy palms. The growth rate of the Date Palms can be slow to moderate.
The True Date or Phoenix dactylifera is a majestic Palm with blue green fronds that extend out with little arch. The Medjool is a popular variety as an ornamental palm due to the appearance of the palm. There are other varieties including the Deglet nour and the Zahidi. All are slow growing and zone 8b palms. They are extremely drought tolerant palms.

The Phoenix canariensis or Canary Island Date Palm is the largest of the single trunk Date Palms. It is among the slowest growing too. It's slow growth rate and massive size and weight make it one of the most expensive palms you can buy. They are impressive though. There really is no substitute. With a spread of 25 feet plus it will dominate an area like no other single trunk palm.

The Phoenix sylvestris is a faster growing single trunk date palm that will give you a lot of bang for your buck. The fronds are greenish blue and have a bushier appearance than the other two major date palms. The Sylvester Palm is drought tolerant but will due equally well in a soil that is moist.
