Date Palms in the landscape including Medjools, Canary Island Date Palms and Sylvester Palms

The Major Date Palms can put an exclamation point on any landscape. Residential Landscapes and Commercial Landscapes both can benefit from the use of Date Palms. They are drought tolerant and the Date Palms are cold hardy palms. The growth rate of the Date Palms can be slow to moderate.

The True Date or Phoenix dactylifera is a majestic Palm with blue green fronds that extend out with little arch. The Medjool is a popular variety as an ornamental palm due to the appearance of the palm. There are other varieties including the Deglet nour and the Zahidi. All are slow growing and zone 8b palms. They are extremely drought tolerant palms.

The Phoenix canariensis or Canary Island Date Palm is the largest of the single trunk Date Palms. It is among the slowest growing too. It's slow growth rate and massive size and weight make it one of the most expensive palms you can buy. They are impressive though. There really is no substitute. With a spread of 25 feet plus it will dominate an area like no other single trunk palm.

The Phoenix sylvestris is a faster growing single trunk date palm that will give you a lot of bang for your buck. The fronds are greenish blue and have a bushier appearance than the other two major date palms. The Sylvester Palm is drought tolerant but will due equally well in a soil that is moist.

Florida Wholesale Palms - Fertilizing Palms for the Spring Season

A Quality Plant is expecting this year to be a record breaking year for wholesale palms sales! Each of the last five years has been better than the last. I am glad that AQP planted thousands of palms each of those years to keep up with the demand.

Phoenix sylvestris, Silver Date Palm
Sylvester Palm pumped up with Fertilizer

A Quality Plant has just finished fertilizing our palms. Beating the rain has been the trick. All of our Sylvester Palms in the front field got 8 pounds of fertilizer two weeks ago and have had three healthy rains. We fertilized the other two fields today and we are getting a bunch of rain right now! I love the rain after fertilizing. It will be getting pretty cold on Friday in Central Florida. That I can skip!

Wholesale Palms are the primary business at A Quality Plant. It is important that we grow high quality wholesale palms at affordable prices. The faster you can get the palm to that point the better in a market like this. I have never regretted dropping extra fertilizer on our palms. We have upped the quantity of fertilizer per palm each year with great results.

Homeowners will want to fertilize their palms with Palm Fertilizer at least twice a year. Don't be shy about it. Sylvester Palms with trunk need it to grow healthy and robust. Growers should be fertilizing three to four times a year. A Quality Plant will fertilize all of our Sylvester Palms, Canary Palms, Medjool Palms, Queen Palms, Pindo Palms, Foxtail Palms, Royal Palms, Reclinata Palms, Roebelenii Palms and others four times a year.

Palm Fertilizer will come in many different formulas like 12-6-12 or 10-2-14. What is important in palm fertilizer? Micro-nutrients. Boron, Iron, Magnesium, Manganese...these guys are really important to palms. Palm Special Fertilizers will always have them.

Good luck growing palms!

Although this loved palm can take temperatures into the mid twenties, it does not like frost.

Hybrid Date Palms - Crosses between Canary Island Date Palm, Sylvester Palm, Reclinata Palm, Roebelenii Palm and the True Date Palm

I find it amazing how many variations in leaf form, trunk diameter, seed color and size, growth rate, and clustering characteristics can be found in hybrid date palms.

The first generation seems to be fairly predictable. The second and third generation have much less predictable results. Some of these Hybrid x Hybrid palms are exceptionally beautiful and robust while others are equally unattractive.

Date Palms (Phoenix varieties) are either male or female. The females must be polinated by another date palm. They don't care which date palm variety. That is what leads to the hybrids. In contrast, the Queen Palm has both male and female flowers at the same time and can polinate itself.

Here are some samples of first and second/third generation hybrids:

Wholesale Palms Florida - Sylvester Palm Hybrids - Doubles

A Quality Plant installed two different Sylvester Palm Hybrid doubles at two residences in Hillsborough County, Florida last week. One palm was installed in Dover, Florida. The other Sylvester Palm Hybrid was installed in Apollo Beach, Florida.

Date palms are known for hybridizing as each palm is either male or female and must be pollinated by another date palm. Date Palms that form seeds are females and will always be females. Male Date Palms have flowers that bloom on what looks like a feather duster. Hybrids can then get pollinated and lead to some unusual results. This process of cross pollination makes it difficult to assure that any seeds collected are "true" to the variety.

Wholesale Date Palms - Date Palm Trees - Sylvester Date Palm

Sylvester Palm - Silver Date Palm - Phoenix sylvestris

This is a 7' ct Sylvester Date Palm (Phoenix sylvestris) that our wholesale palm tree farm delivered and installed for our landscape customer in Apollo Beach, Fl. On the same job we also installed a large, full headed Queen palm (Syagrus romanoffziana) on the side of their property and will be bringing in some 14' triple Foxtail Palms (Wodyetia bifurcata) to create a privacy barrier for them.
The Sylvester Date Palm (Phoenix sylvestris) and Queen palm (Syagrus romanoffziana) are fairly cold hardy palms, the Foxtail Palms (Wodyetia bifurcata) are not quite as cold hardy but should do well because our landscape customer is on the water where it will be more protected from the cold.

Our wholesale tree farm sells to the public as well as wholesale customers, discount or wholesale palm tree pricing is available for landscapers, contractors or anyone purchasing in quantity. Landscape quotes are always free call for yours today.

Grey Wood Queen Palm Installation
Sylvester Palm Installation
We returned to the Rogers residence to install more cold hardy palms including a Grey Wood Queen Palm and a Sylvester Palm. The Queen palm required staking and is being used to create privacy for the Rogers. The palm was approximately 30' tall and blocks the view from the neighbor's balcony. The Sylvester Palm completes the front of the house by anchoring the left side of the driveway.

Sylvester Palm - Sulber Date Palm
December 1, 2010
We removed a dead Christmas Palm today and a Live Oak. We planted two Date Palms in their place. Sylvester Palms were Date Palms selected by A Quality Plant's customers. The first Sylvester Palm was 12' tall and the second Sylvester Palm had 4' of clear trunk.

Both Sylvester Palms received a finish cut and the thatch was removed with a razor knife. Sylvester Palms look really nice with a finish cut. These two were no exception.

The Sylvester Palm is a Cold Hardy Palm and is well suited for the climate in Zone 9. The Sylvester Palm is salt tolerant and drought tolerant too.

Check out our great prices on Sylvester Palms today!

Wholesale Palms Florida - A Quality Plant

Sylvester Palm Installation
A Quality Plant removed three Silver Date Palms / Sylvester Palms and replaced them with new ones. Two of the palms looked like they were planted too deep and the other shocked from having too much foliage left on during transplant. The Sylvester Palms we put in should be fine. We have thousands of Sylvester Palms at Wholesale Palm Prices.

We installed a small Roebelenii Palm / Pygmy Date Palm today too. The palm we were replacing had died from the cold.
