A Florida Fancy Canary will have all of the above going for it. A Florida #1 will be a very nice palm but will be missing slightly in one or more of the determining factors. A Florida #2 will be substantially missing in one or more characteristics.

I prefer a Canary with good distinction between the smooth part of the trunk and the Pineapple.

A Quality Plant supplies Palms and Plants to Hollywood for Movies - Wholesale Palms

A Quality Plant had the priveledge of providing palm trees to Hollywood movies on two different occassions. The first group of palm trees were for the movie "Battle: Los Angeles". The palms were very tall Washingtonia Palms with the foliage removed. The palm tree foliage was actually added later and was not real. The trunks of the palm trees were though!

That was pretty cool to be a part of. We are now providing palm trees and tropical plants to the upcoming movie starring..Johnny Depp!! The movie is a real life story about Whitey Bulger.

Black Mass is an upcoming crime movie by Scott Cooper starring Johnny Depp as the infamous organized crime figure Whitey Bulger. The movie is based on the best selling novel by Dick Lehr and Gerald O'Neill about Bulger's true life story. The action/drama also stars Benedict Cumberpatch and Dakota Johnlson and is set to be released in October of 2015.

The palms are going to be donated to an indoor tropical garden after the movie shots with the palm trees and plants are complete. That is very cool too!

We can trim up the Pineapple on the Canary Island Date Palm or leave the ferns on the palm. Either way, the Canary Island Date Palm is impressive.

Canary Island Date Palm's have different grades.

#2.  Most palm trees have no value as a Florida #2. Although we rarely install a #2, they do have some value. A #2 would have imperfections like constrictions in the trunk or a head that has very few green fronds. Some Canary Island Date Palm's can have deep holes in the trunk or chainsaw gouges that are deep.

#1. A #1 Canary Island Date Palm has good color and average trunk caliper. A nice palm.

Florida Fancy. A Florida Fancy Canary Island Date Palm has everything going for it...Great color on the fronds, large caliper trunk and a very defined Pineapple once trimmed.

The Areca Palm or Golden Cane Palm hardly needs an introduction. Outdoors, the Areca Palm quickly develops into an elegant midsized palm with densely clustering, slender, green trunks; yellow crownshafts and leafstalks; and recurving, V-shaped leaves. The Areca Palm will tolerate cool conditions to some extent, as well as light frosts, and is suited to climates ranging from subtropical to tropical.

Hybrid Date Palms with a TWIST! Wholesale Date Palm Hybrids

A Quality Plant has many unique Date Palm Hybrids. Not all Hybrids are created equal though. Some have the best characteristics of both parents. Some Hybrid Palms have thicker trunks and prettier fronds than their parents. The Palm featured here was initially grown in deep shade. Reclinata's will hunt for the sun in deep shade. They can twist and turn looking for the light. This palm was removed from the shade and put into full sun. It took a couple years to fully aclimate to full sun but the result is stunning.

Hybrid Date Palms - Crosses between Canary Island Date Palm, Sylvester Palm, Reclinata Palm, Roebelenii Palm and the True Date Palm

I find it amazing how many variations in leaf form, trunk diameter, seed color and size, growth rate, and clustering characteristics can be found in hybrid date palms.

The first generation seems to be fairly predictable. The second and third generation have much less predictable results. Some of these Hybrid x Hybrid palms are exceptionally beautiful and robust while others are equally unattractive.

Date Palms (Phoenix varieties) are either male or female. The females must be polinated by another date palm. They don't care which date palm variety. That is what leads to the hybrids. In contrast, the Queen Palm has both male and female flowers at the same time and can polinate itself.

Canary Island Date Palm Replacement - Dead Canary Island Date Palm

A Quality Plant was contacted by a customer in Valrico, Florida who wanted a Canary Island Date Palm replaced. The customer's yard had several other mature Pineapple Palms in it. The dead Canary Palm had a match on the other side of the yard.
