Areca Palm / Dypsis lutescens

The Areca Palm / Golden Cane Palm

As one of the world's most popular indoor plants, the Golden Cane Palm or Areca Palm hardly needs an introduction. Outdoors, the Areca Palm quickly develops into an elegant, mid-sized palm with densely clestering, slender, green trunks; yellow crownshafts and leafstalks; and arching, V-shaped leaves. The Areca Palm makes a fantastic privacy hedge. If you are using the Areca Palm for privacy, make sure the plants you purchase are multiple plants per pot. Growers will plant a half dozen or more in one pot to make for a dense plant.

Dypsis lutescens originally comes from Madagascar, the home of so many exciting palms, where it grows in coastal forest on sandy soils. It will tolerate cool conditions to some extent, as well as light frosts, and is best suited to climates ranging from sub-tropical to tropical.
